My wife, Amanda, and I are the proud owners of a beautiful, 125lb male Rottweiler named Ramses. We always considered ourselves “experienced” dog owners as we both grew up around big dogs and owned many over the years. Unfortunately, while we always fancied ourselves fully capable of raising the ideal dog, we were wrong. We began to notice Ramses showing aggression towards other dogs-even putting our pug in the doggy hospital on several occasions. As time passed, the aggression turned to children and finally my wife. It was hard for us to understand what went wrong, as we raised Ramses just like all of our other dogs. So, it wasn’t until Ramses actually bit Amanda on the leg that we admitted to ourselves we needed help. While many would have put the dog down or given him away, we realized that he was our responsibility. It would not be fair to make him someone else’s problem or take away his life when we were the cause of his “acting out”. However, at the same time, we had heard horror stories concerning other “dog trainers”, we were terrified to begin the search and felt as if our situation was hopeless. Luckily, I stumbled across Brian’s website.

While reading all of the wonderful accolades on Brian’s page, I came across a review written by a good friend of mine. The next day I asked my friend and she couldn’t recommend Brian enough. So I made the call and our lives have changed tremendously since that day. Brian recommended Ramses take part in his 45-day rehab program with “the pack”. So, we did it. Brian kept us posted through the whole process, sending pictures and emails several times a week. We had four meet-up and in home sessions where Brian trained my wife and I to be calm, consistent, and confident dog owners. A month into the program Ramses was a different dog. This proved to us what we already knew; with calm, assertive leadership Ramses was capable of being the dog we always knew he was at heart.

On the day Ramses returned home we met at a dog park. Amanda and I sat in the car and watched as Ramses ran around the park calmly and happily. At one point another dog even snapped at Ramses and he just looked to Brian and walked away! This is a dog that, a month prior, would have retaliated and seriously injured the other animal. As more time has passed we have put Ramses in many situations we never would have before. He is going on several walks a day to the beach (even off leash with my wife), to Petco, and to friend’s houses. He is meeting strangers on a daily basis and responding to commands we never thought possible (He fully respects all rules and boundaries we place on him—not coming into the kitchen while we eat, sitting patiently at the top of the stairs until we invite him down, etc). And this brings me to the biggest change we have experienced…Brian gave us confidence and peace of mind.
We were in a very bad place before Brian was able to offer his help, constantly living in a state of fear. With these new tools Brian taught us, we have learned how to enjoy owning a “power” breed. I highly recommend that anyone needing help, be it with an aggressive dog or just a tune up, contact Brian because you will not regret it.

Thank You, Brian.

Subject: for you

When Eli came to live with us, he was fourteen months old, cute and quite a handful. He would jump on chairs, grab and chew chair cushions, run off with personal items and be generally uncontrollable and “fresh”. When we tried to bring him for a walk he would constantly pull on his leash, making it difficult for us to have an enjoyable walk. He had acquired too many bad habits. Thus, we nicknamed him “The Boston Terror”. Eli needed help.

After much thought and research, we decided to call in Brian. Brian’s first of four visits was quite memorable for us. Within minutes of meeting Eli, Brian had complete control of him, something we had not been able to accomplish up to that time. We stood in amazement during those first few hours as we watched Brian handle Eli gently and calmly, without yelling or using inhumane ways. Eli followed Brian’s direction easily and willingly. It was during that first visit that we knew we had chosen the right man for the job and that Eli would soon be on his way to becoming a good family member. Brian made it look so easy, but as he warned us, it would be a lot of work. (It was worth it!)

Over the four sessions, Brian taught us how to handle Eli’s behaviors. It has been about 5 months since Brian’s first visit and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Even walking Eli has become an enjoyable exercise for us, as well as for him. We so enjoy having Eli around
because we now have the skills to handle his behaviors and life in our household is a lot calmer. Thank you, Brian, for the knowledge and skills you imparted on us.

A million thanks for your professional and compassionate help in getting our Finley's behavior under control. What began as "just puppy behavior" gradually became a dominance issue in our home. Barking was the rule of thumb, jumping on everyone was a game for him, and walking, a total disaster - we were being taken for walks!

Enter Brian: Calmly, firmly, he instructed our family about what was to unfold - the need for consistency and a lot of tough love for Finley. For positive changes to occur it would require following prescribed protocols with 100% consistency. No failures! Positive changes do become permanent.

Brian reminded us that this was a commitment. Fin would be around for a lot of years, so why not be able to enjoy him.

Brian really had the answers to all of our behavior questions and came up with steps to overcome our concerns. With Brian's help Finley is just as happy as can be and so are we! Finley is obedient, comes on verbal cue, sits, stays, and waits for food & treats to be given. No more jumping on visitors, attention seeking barking has all but ceased, he is calmer and happier. Family and friends can't believe the difference in him.

Thanks to Brian Manning, Finley, and his family are happy campers.

Brian, you're the best!
MANY THANKS,
Tom and Tender Boyle

Wanting to share our experience with Canine Behavioral Services;

We are a family of five with three teenage girls and a year ago had to put our 14 ½ year old male Dalmatian to sleep as he was getting old and starting to fail. A year later on 02-20-2011 we purchased two male Dalmatians born on 01-01-2011 from a breeder in Washington State. We were only looking for one dog however they had two males, one black spotted and the other liver spotted, and the liver spotted was deaf and the breeder was hoping they would go together. So we ended up with two seven week old puppies and not having a puppy for the past 14 or so years it was an experience. At 12 weeks we found the two dogs occasionally fighting and we were having a hard time separating them as they were locked on to each other. As a few weeks went on we found the problem becoming more frequent so we decided to attend a dog behavioral class at the Westerly Animal Shelter and at the class we met Brian as he spoke briefly about dogs behaviors and training. After the class my wife took his card as we were impressed with his knowledge and dedication to dog training. Shortly after getting home (same night) the two 3 month old puppies began fighting and one of their ears were cut open and the others leg. As a result my wife called Brian left a frantic message looking for some assistance. He got right back to us the next morning and scheduled a session with us within two days. Not promising anything he explained we may ultimately have to find a new home for one of the dogs, as this was not uncommon with liter mates. He explained we had three things not going in our favor, one: liter mates, two: both males, and three: one was deaf. However he explained it would take a lot of work and us working with him to correct the problem.

He arrived and wanted all three children there during the entire three hour session as he wanted us all to be on the same page. He spent three hours with the dogs and us and came up with many suggestions, one being for us to show no affection toward either of the dogs until the next session (two weeks later). He wanted us to feed, take them out and show no attention to them at all. This was extremely hard as they are two puppies and want nothing but attention. We worked are best at doing this and the next session he worked on all kinds of techniques with us showing them we were in charge and they were not. This was very frustrating and at times seemed like it would not work, as they were always on their best behavior around Brian. He explained if we worked hard at overcoming the problems we would correct the problem, but we had to be committed. In the end we had two other sessions and we have not had any other fighting since the second session. They are always side by side and play with each other for hours at a time. They play rough, however no fighting and they have developed into two (most of the time) well behaved 8 month old puppies.

In the end Brian trained us and the dogs to overcome the problem and thanks to his quick response, patience, commitment, and dedication to addressing the problem early we were able to keep our two dogs together. I have the upmost respect for Brian as he is very well versed in animal behaviors and training to overcome behaviors. With trainers like Brian pet owners should feel confident he will work hard to overcome poor pet behaviors.

We have become friendly with Brian and have taken his recommendation with Life Abundance foods. We have also taken advantage of his Boarding services on three occasions, which has taken the stress away from us when traveling. The dogs actually enjoy going and get excited when arriving at his kennels, as they have gained great social skills because all the dogs play together.

Keep up the good work Brian, as I would highly recommend you to anyone looking for behavioral assistance with their animals, as anyone in need of boarding.

Our dog, Oliver, is a three-year old Springer Spaniel. His energy is endless, and he is just a big goof. However, Oliver has a strange guarding issue- he loves tissues and paper products! His guarding went too far, and he bit my husband, my mother, and me in the course of two years. We have a toddler, and decided that Oliver needed help we didn’t know how to give him if he was to stay in the family.

We initially signed up for the in-home training. The very first day Brian came to our house, we saw some changes in Oliver. At the time, Ollie was taking medication for anxiety, but it didn’t seem to make much difference. He was very nervous at first, but responded well to Brian.

Ollie actually needed more help than we had anticipated. We sent him to the In-Patient Training Program for six weeks. I was afraid that he wouldn’t be able to stay in our home if we didn’t. He came back for a short visit after four weeks, and he was like a new dog! His permanent return two weeks later showed even more progress.

Oliver is a work in progress, and we continue to work with him every day. Brian’s techniques have proved very successful, and we couldn’t be happier. He is now off his medication, still goofy, and we’re proud to have him as a member of our family.

I have a dog named Gizmo who, before meeting Brian, was terrified of most people and becoming more and more aggressive with the passing months out of fear. She had a very tough puppyhood before we adopted her, and we didn't know how to ease her fears ourselves. I love her dearly, but I couldn't trust anyone else with her because I didn't know how she would react to them. When I first heard that I might have to send my dog away for rehabilitation for 45 days, I simply hung up the phone. I was not going to let a stranger take my dog away from me for a month and a half. After talking with Brian about the situation, though, he assured me that he would be able to build her confidence and make her a balanced and more easy-going dog. I finally realized that it would be the best thing for her because I didn't want her to live in fear anymore.

I agreed to the program and Brian continued to work with me and train me while he was fostering Gizmo. When I went to pick her up after her "vacation" was over, I welled up when I looked into the yard and saw her cooperatively playing with the other dogs. I couldn't believe the difference. Before the program, Gizmo would not walk on a leash. She would dig her paws in and resist until she would start to choke and we'd have to just pick her up (all 60 pounds of her) and bring her wherever we were going. When we returned home the first thing I did was walk her, and she did not stop or pull a single time. I was so delighted to see the difference in her, especially when she ignored passersby, that I was in tears by the time I returned home.

If it hadn't been for this program, it would only have been a matter of time before Gizmo bit someone out of protection and had to be put down. I believe that Brian may have saved her life! We never would have been able to do it on our own, even with the countless dog-training books I had digested. Brian trained me into the pack leader that I need to be so that Gizmo has
someone to follow and trust. She now understands that she doesn't have to protect herself - I, the pack leader, will take care of everything for her. Her understanding of the world and her role in it changed her attitude completely. She is a confident, sociable dog now and we are happier than we've ever been.

Thank you so much, Brian!

Dear Brian,

We are writing to thank you for your amazing dedication to helping those dogs who have serious behavior issues like our Josey. Just looking at that beautiful German Shepherd, a person would never guess how distressed she really was, until she started to bark, and bark, and bark, and bark! Your frank analysis of her dominance and fear aggression, and her prognosis if untreated left no doubt that Josey needed your in-patient behavioral rehabilitation program.

Your hard work with her, and with us, has been a true success. Josey now regularly attends Alpha Dog daycare three times a week, where she interacts with the rest of the dogs beautifully. In fact, one of the Alpha Dog staff members, who knew Josey from our forays to Pet Smart, has remarked on a number of occasions that "Josey is truly a different dog now."

We asked her to take some pictures of Josey and her friends during the day, and we are sending a set to you so that you can enjoy seeing Josey's remarkable progress, and know that you've given her the opportunity to live a happy, healthy life.

With our sincerest thanks,

Dear Brian,

We just wanted to follow-up with you to let you know how great the results were with Red Dog this past summer, after the “in-patient” program at Canine Behavioral Services. As you’ll recall, Red Dog was great interacting with our family, but began exhibiting increasing levels of aggression with encountering other dogs during walks, and particularly with visitors to our home. The problem escalated to the point that my wife became afraid to actually walk him alone without me, in fear of any number of different potential unwanted scenarios.

At first, we thought that we would work with you on the standard “4-session in-home modification plan”, but quickly agreed during the initial visit that the “in-patient” program at your facility was warranted and really in Red Dog’s best interest in terms of optimizing chances for success. Our daughter was a bit upset at the thought of not seeing him for possibly a month and a half, but we explained that it was the best way to correct Red’s problems.

All that I can say is that we were incredibly impressed with the results of the time he spent with you and the “pack”. Red came back a truly changed dog and we learned a great deal of behavioral techniques from you to utilize with him on a day-to-day basis consistently to ensure ongoing success. The positive change in his demeanor was an additional benefit- his improved obedience listening to commands and a reduction in his “nervous energy” were additional unexpected gains as well. The overall behavioral changes and improvements have just been amazing, and Red himself seems much happier knowing his proper role within the pack.

We are very thankful for the attention and focus that you were able to provide for Red Dog in helping to ensure the very positive outcome from his session/stay with you. In fact, we were so pleased with his interaction with the “pack” that we intend to continue using your company for boarding in the future for those times away, even though there are boarding kennels located much closer within our area. We’re sure that Red Dog will be pleased to see his “pack buddies” again as well!

Thank you once again for your effort, and we would be pleased to provide reference recommendations for anyone considering use of your services, if they would like to speak with a previous client.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hi Martha,

Our 2 year old dogs, a brother and sister shepard/lab mix, had developed very severe behavior problems that were getting impossible to control. Before we sought Brian Manning and his business, we had tried multiple training techniques and even a different "professional" trainer. However, none of this seemed to work and we were at our last straw-until we found Canine Behavioral Services. After discussing the behavior problems with Brian Manning, he recommended the "in-patient" program for our two dogs, Jack and Kelly. Shortly after this, we set up a meeting time at our home in East Haddam, CT. There, he assessed their problems better and decided to take our male dog, Jack, first. Jack had the worst behavior problems of the two, and frankly, we didn't think that they would ever be able to be changed. Before Jack had left, we had discussed how Brian was going to use several different training techniques with Jack, including the "pack-leadership method". He was going to incorporate Jack into a pack of well balanced dogs (in addition to one-on-one intensive training).

While Jack was at training, I was constantly able to communicate with Brian and literally watch Jack's progress through pictures that he sent me. I was amazed to see and hear how Jack was doing while he was there. Another wonderful aspect of the training was that it wasn't run like a strict business- Brian was going to work with Jack and Kelly for however long it took for them to improve, without any extra cost. A month or so after Jack had been there, Kelly went into the training with Jack. After Jack had been there for nearly two months (and Kelly about two weeks), we were able to go visit them and actually see their progress and improvements, which reassured me on how well they were doing.

Jack remained there for another month and a half or so, and was finally able to come back home (with Kelly still training since she had gone in after Jack). When Brian walked through the door with Jack, we saw a completely different, renewed dog. He was calm, and extremely obedient, but yet still had his personality that we loved (just without the behavior problems!) We were able to have complete strangers come in the house (both Jack and Kelly had extreme fear/dominance aggression toward strangers) and actually walk up to Jack and feed him. This was the moment when I realized that Jack had truly changed and that he would be able to remain part of our family for the rest of his life, as long as we listened to the instructions from Brian on how to keep Jack well-balanced.

Brian is also going to continue working with Jack from our home and monitor our progress with Jack to make sure that everything is running smoothly. It's been around a week since we've had Jack back home. He's a completely different dog, that is well-balanced and is now beginning to respect our authority as his leaders. Brian Manning truly saved Jack from a not-so-good future and in doing so, has also helped our family so much. Brian was also very good with teaching our whole family on how to keep the good-behaviors in Jack, and also explaining to us every bit of training that Jack received. Our dog Kelly will be coming back from her training very shortly, and from what I've seen with Jack, and also heard from Brian, it appears that she will also be able to enjoy a long life with our family. Don't have any doubt about sending your dog to Brian Manning and Canine Behavioral Services- it was the best thing in the world that we could have done for Jack and Kelly.

Brian truly cares about them and I could tell that it was extremely important to him that he was able to successfully change them. If you want a real change for your 8 year old Weimaraner, than I would highly recommend Brian Manning and Canine Behavioral Services.

Sincerely,
Brian Linares

Hi Brian:

Since your visit in late November Seaver has been the model dog! The training collar has been a game changer! Seaver rarely is on leash anymore and we can take him in public without any of the anxiety we had before. The ultimate test was a couple of weekends ago when we took him for a walk on the beach totally off leash. Many distractions such as people, dogs, and water weren't a problem. Seaver was totally in control and waited for our signal to play with the other dogs.

We still have to "remind" him occasionally that he has the collar on but the reminders are becoming less frequent. We are finally really starting to enjoy Seaver and he is much calmer now that he can run, play, and explore in a controlled manner.
Thought you might want feedback on a problem case like Seaver (especially when it's positive) so you know that you did a great job!

Thanks for your help and please be assured if any of our friends need help with their dogs we will highly recommend you.
Thanks again and maybe will visit you this Summer.

Dear Brian:

(Written from the dogs perspective) - Thank you for coming to my house and saving me from my family. All that "googoo" baby talk was driving me crazy! What's a dog to do? They finally got the hang of it after your training. Now they never let me out of the house first. They always make me wait for my dinner, and won't even let me scarf down my brother's dinner if he's slower than me. It took them pretty long to realize that I actually LIKE my crate, and I just need to get away from all that kissy-face stuff they do to me? I don't even have to nip at them much anymore to get their attention (but sometimes I still do it, especially to the Mom).

I'm letting them teach me all kinds of tricks, stay, sit, wait, lay down...and I'm really good on the walks now. I even like the treadmill - 15mins every other day is making me a buff dog! I always wait for permission to get up on the furniture, and I don't even miss going upstairs in the bedrooms (too many accidents, oops). I even overheard them ordering a wireless fence for the yard so I won't have to stay on that stupid lead anymore. Yeah!! I hope I like it. Actually, I hope they figure it out before they stun me to death (expect a call Brian, they're slow learners).

I just wanted you to know that I'm doing great now. I knew it wasn't me all along, it was them (especially the Mom, talk about slow...). You're the best friend a feisty, tough girl like me could ever have. Hope to see you on the trails, or stop by and visit. I'll tell you all about my rabid raccoon adventure and the nice guy who came from the DEM.....

Hi Dana

I am very pleased with Brian’s services. My little spaniel, Gus, spent three weeks at his “boot camp” and came home a changed pup - for the better. But, Brian also helped me learn how to deal with Gus, and my two other dogs. He helped me develop the confidence and skills that I needed to regain control of the household and I will be forever grateful for that.

Please keep in mind that Brian can lay the foundation, but it is up to us to continue the training once the dog comes home. As a result of everything, my household is a lot more peaceful and I am sure I can handle whatever situation arises.

Brian is a great guy and I have seen what he can do with a fear aggressive dog and the owner. He really taught me to take the emotion out of the situation- once I was able to do that, things changed dramatically. He has a no-nonsense, honest approach which I find refreshing.

To me, it was an investment that has already paid off. I hope this helps you. Feel free to contact me at any time.

Hi Brian,

I emailed you earlier in the week but I don't know if you got it. I wanted to tell you that the dog that attacked Bubba & I this summer came after us again on Monday. He ran out of his yard & charged at us & believe it or not Bubba had little to no reaction. His hackles stood up but that was it. The dog continued to charge at us all the way home but I was able to keep him away with my pepper spray. I don't think Bubba even looked at him he just kept watching me the whole time. I couldn't believe it. He's a totally different dog. He even gave up going to the bathroom in the house. I haven't put him in his crate for 2 weeks & he hasn't gone in the house yet.

I brought him to my neighbors house last night & she kept saying how different he acted. He seems a lot calmer & happier. I just wanted to thank you for teaching me how to handle him. He has done a total turn around. Without your training he would still be acting like Cujo.

I want to continue walking with you so please let me know when it's good for you. I'd like to bring him at least once a week. I can't wait for you to see how different he is.

I'll talk to you soon and thanks again.

Subject: Brian Manning- Canine Behavioral Services

Dear Mario:

When I heard that you are considering running a story about Brian Manning’s business, Canine Behavioral Services, I had to write to you to share my own experience as I think it is illustrative of the life changing help that Brian can provide to any frustrated dog owner.

Now understand, I am a lifelong animal lover who believes that pets are truly members of the family. I have been involved with numerous animal welfare organizations over the years and up until recently I felt that I knew quite a bit about caring for pets.

My husband and I have two dogs; a 4 year old miniature long-haired dachshund named Maisy and a 7 year old Silky Terrier named Elliot. Although our two dogs weigh less than 20 lbs. combined, we could not control them. About a year ago, we had reached our wits end. Elliot was exhibiting aggression and Maisy was a chronic barker. I started asking around for references of local dog trainers. After a month or so, I had narrowed my search down to two people; Brian and someone else. Both came highly recommended, so I gave them both a call. Brian explained his services stating that he goes to a client’s home and can rectify most behavior problems in one visit. I have to be honest when I tell you that I chose the other trainer because I didn’t believe that Brian could deliver what he promised; in other words, he sounded too good to be true. So, I hired the other trainer, spent twice the money and got basic obedience training that did not address the behavioral issues.

Fast forward 6 months to August of this year. One of my customers at work mentioned that he had hired Brian to work with his dog and he was thrilled with the results. I still had Brian’s card, so I gave him a call and made an appointment. He came to the house and we got right to the root of the problem. The problem was not the dogs, it was us! We were not taking the leadership role in our own house. Through simple techniques, Brian taught us how to be the pack leaders. Things as simple as daily walks, controlling feeding time and being confident and consistent with our behavior made a world of difference. Our dogs are clearly more at peace and well adjusted than ever before. Friends and family have commented that they are like different dogs.

I promote Brian’s business to whoever will listen. I truly believe that if more people knew of Brian’s services, there would be fewer dogs in shelters in Rhode Island and Southeastern CT. Brian can assist pet owners with so many of the undesirable behaviors that lead to people giving up their pets.

Dear Mario:

I understand that you may be interested in running an article about Brian Manning and his business, Canine Behavioral Services. Please allow me to share with you our families experience with Brian.

In our home we have 2 dogs, a 2 year old Shih-Tzu / Poodle mix and a one year Golden Doodle (Golden / Poodle). We reached out to Brian this past summer because it became apparent that there were behavioral issues that we could no longer manage. Our little Shi-Poo, Coco, was busting thru an electric fence to attack dogs that were being walked down our street to the beach! Once Coco went thru the fence, all hell would break loose. Our Golden doodle would then follow out into the street and it was a circus act to get things back under control. We are a dog loving family and have had dogs all of our lives but we did not know how to change this behavior. Enter Brian......

By the way, we had also watched the Dog Whisper show in the National Geographic channel but never really thought that the accomplishments shown on TV were in real time and most likely had occurred over a long period of training etc.
When Brian came to the house he spent over an hour with us as a family, interviewing and asking questions about how we deal / interact with our dogs. He discussed his concepts of being a pack leader and the need for our family to take a greater role in being our pets pack leader. Then he demonstrated his "techniques" on our dogs. The results were nothing short of
amazing! Brian then spent an hour going over what we need to do in order to gain control of our pet’s behavior and regain balance in our household.

The beauty of what Brian did for us what that there was no yelling at the dogs or aggressive punishing techniques, it was a matter of understanding the cause and effect of their behavior as well as our own. As a family, we now understand what was causing the aggressive behavior of our Shi-Poo and more importantly, we know what to do to prevent it as well as other behavioral issues. By the end our first session with Brian, our "attack" Shih-Tzu was playing in the yard with Brian's 100 lb. Rottweiler. It was truly a sight to behold!

For people who love dogs but are frustrated with behavioral issues that they cannot seem to get control of, Brian Manning is a remarkable resource. If more people in RI knew about his services there would be a lot more happy pet owners. Brian is a great young man providing valuable service to countless dog owners. He has a unique gift to communicate his knowledge to clients in a way that empowers them to take control of their pet.

It is my opinion that you would be doing the citizens of RI a real favor if you were to provide them with exposure to Brian Manning and his business Canine Behavioral Services.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
Sincerely,
Glenn Elia
